Thailand Holiday

Muay Thai and Boot Camp

Holidays mean different things to different people. Many just want to take time out to relax, be pampered and do as little as possible when finally given the chance to escape their usual chaotic lifestyle. Others look at holidays as the opportunity to broaden their education, visiting places of great cultural or historical interest and note, or simply areas of outstanding natural beauty. Others however, will consider a holiday as the perfect time to seek out a new and exciting challenge or to learn a new life skill.

Those who class themselves in that final category may wish to consider a trip to Thailand - not so much for the tropical beaches and tantalising cuisine (though these are surely reason enough!) - but for some time at a Muay Thai boot camp.

Muay Thai is Thailand's national sport and is a challenging form of martial art, similar to kick boxing. Originally, Muay Thai was used in military training in Thailand, due to the complexity and stamina required to master the ancient art, which extensively combines the use of hands, feet, elbows and knees. Nowadays it is widely practiced across the country and due to its popularity with overseas visitors, Muay Thai clubs are becoming more commonplace in cities across the globe.

One advantage of Muay Thai being Thailand's national sport is that there is no shortage of experienced instructors available, only too happy to pass on their valuable knowledge and expertise to paying visitors. Muay Thai training camps are numerous across the country and are popular with visitors and locals alike.

You don't have to be any kind of martial arts expert to visit one of these camps or even be looking to take up the sport. Many visitors simply enjoy the training regime, which concentrates heavily upon improving fitness levels and stamina, making it an ideal training foundation for sports men and women undertaking any discipline. Time spent in a Muay Thai camp is also ideal for promoting weight loss and detoxing, as well as providing an opportunity to learn the basics of this ancient and fascinating martial art.

Camps frequently offer specialist nutrition and dietary advice and yoga is also commonly practiced as part of any training programme, to relax the mind and body. Many camps also appreciate that visitors are on holiday and will organise group activities, where fellow 'inmates' can share experiences and form lasting friendships. For those seeking a more individual or private Muay Thai experience, one to one training is almost always available.

Muay Thai in itself is suitable for most individuals, although a basic, reasonable level of health and fitness is recommended before signing up to any form of intensive training camp. Most camps across Thailand offer various types of packages, meaning the more dedicated can book in for anything up to three weeks, whilst the less adventurous can ease themselves in rather more gently with a beginners taster course, for as short a time as two days.

Whilst it may not be everyone's idea of the perfect break, if you feel like trying something new and different for your next holiday, Muay Thai could be just the thing. And of course, if despite all your best intentions, boot camp proves to be too much like hard work, it's worth remembering that in Thailand, you'll never be more than a stones throw away from the peace and tranquillity of beautiful beaches, cocktails and a wealth of sumptuous cuisine to help you truly relax. So whether you choose boot camp or beach lounger, cheap holidays can offer a wealth of locations, prices and activities to suit almost every individual.
